The Community Service Project of the Year Award is presented annually by the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce to an area non- or not-for-profit 501(c) 3 or 501(c) 6 that enhances the community, provides for economic well-being of the area and encourages further development in the region. The award was presented to The Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers in recognition of their recent Hague Accreditation that establishes safeguards to ensure intercountry adoption occurs in the best interest of children and families, and with the highest levels of integrity and ethics in practice. Only 204 adoption service providers in the United States have achieved Hague Accreditation or Approval through the Council on Accreditation for international adoption. "This Community Project of the Year Award means a lot to our agency and is another great way to honor our entire staff for their hard work. The Hague Accreditation has meant so much to our agency and we are extremely honored to be recognized by the Chamber for what the Accreditation means to our community," said Sharon Abrams, executive director of Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers. The 18-month Hague Accreditation process was led by six Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers employees, working to meet the accreditation requirements and obtain proper documentation for submission. To apply for accreditation the agency had to update policies, procedures and provide comprehensive financial records from the agency's 111-year history. The Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers operates the state's longest-running adoption program. In addition to the agency's Hague Accredited adoption program, The Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers also provides the community with a variety of services including, outpatient counseling, a Teen Parent School Program, The Children's Place Early Care and Education Center, a summer camp scholarship program and a Christmas Program that provides clothing and toys to underprivileged children across Maine. For 48 years, the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce has hosted the Annual Awards Dinner to honor deserving area businesses and business people.
