Internships at Maine Children's Home

Maine Children's Home (MCH) provides two internship experiences — the Generalist Internship and Clinical Concentration Internship — that introduce interns to the world of social services. 

Generalist Internship

The Generalist Internship is a 32 week (400 hour) non-clinical program in which first generalist Master of Social Work (MSW) students can learn about what the staff at MCH do. Students in this program will have the opportunity to spend time learning and participating in all MCH programs (Family Adoption Program, Family Counseling Center, Journey Program, Connected Families Project, and Christmas Program), spending up to four weeks with each program.

Opportunities of the Generalist Internship include:

  • Shadowing counselors individual and group sessions
  • Advocacy and policy work
  • Marketing support with social media and blog content writing
  • Grant writing and grant research
  • Creating surveys and needs assessments
  • Research
  • Attending board meetings and learning about agency oversight

Clinical Concentration Internship

The Clinical Concentration Internship is specialized for social work, counseling, and Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) students. Students in this program will spend their entire placement at MCH's Family Counseling Center and will have weekly supervision with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) from the MCH staff. 

For students who are interested in community development or who have a dual degree, opportunities may be available for them to work with other MCH programs such as Connected Families Project, Christmas Program, or Development when mental-health related projects arise. 

Typical activities of the Clinical Concentration Internship include:

  • Agency orientation
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Coordination and management
  • Assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning
  • Education (outside reading, workshop attendance, etc.)

Internship duration options for Clinical Concentrations include:

  • MSW or MFT students: 32 week (16 hours weekly) part-time for a total of 500 hours
  • MSW or MFT students: 32 hour weekly block placement for a total of 500 hours
  • Clinical mental health counseling students: 45 weeks (20 hours weekly) for a total of 900 hours
  • Clinical mental health counseling students: 30 weeks (30 hours weekly) for a total of 900 hours
